Concert at Sri Raja Rajeshwari Temple,
East Tambaram

Kum K.Jyothsna and Kum K.Radhika the sisters are naturally talented in music having imbibed the art form from their great grand fathers both maternal and paternal. Their paternal great grand father was Sri. Dharmarajaiyer, Founder of Sri Sanathana Dharma Vidhya Shala in Alleppey and also a connoisseur of art. He organized several concerts and was held in high esteem by the renowned artistes of yester years like GNB, MS and others.

Their maternal great grandfather Sri.Ramasubramaniam was a close friend of Sri Harikesanallur Muthaiyya Bhagavathar and was adept in singing and playing several musical instruments. Their parents discovered their musical talents when they were quite young. It was Jyothsna who began to show signs of interest in carnatic music by purchasinga whole lot of cassettes of Shri Maharajapuram Santhanam when she was awarded Rs 250 as proficiency prize at the age of 6.She was lucky to have been trained by eminent teachers like Sri D.Pasupathi, Thadepalli Sri Lokanatha Sharma, Sri T.V.Ramprasad and Sri Poorna Pragya Rao though for short spells.

Smt. Kousalya Santhanam laid the foundation very strong for the sisters when very young. Actually the teacher who during her tuitions to Jyothsna found that Radhika had grasped all of the lessons through “Kelvi Gnanam” and could sing with ease took her too as a student. The sisters’ musical journey began hence…

Radhika ‘s musical talent was discovered at the early age of 3 when she won a competition conducted by Beach Castle Restaurant at Besant Nagar, Chennai. A huge soft toy, (a bunny Rabbit) almost her size, was awarded to her by the actress Baby Sridevi. She won the best all rounder ‘s prize since she had won several prizes in various events especially in music at Kendriya Vidyalaya, CLRI at the age of 4.

The duo have been the lead singers throughout their school days at Sankara Adyar inter school bhajan competition and won several trophies and shields and made their school proud. With the constant encouragement from teachers and parents and renowned musicians, they have been able to gradually climb up the ladder of popularity.

The duo are lucky to have got the blessings of His Holiness Sri Sankaracharya Jayendra sarswathi swamigal when they sang in His chamber and gave them a gold coin and silver coin in appreciation of their divine music. They have also been lucky enough to have been appreciated by the great musicians of our times Smt. M.S.Subbulakshmi and Smt D.K.Pattammal when they rendered songs in their presence. The duo has also been fortunate to have learnt the nuances of the art from Smt. C.Lalitha of Bombay sisters for 5 yrs who constantly encouraged them to give performances. They have also been receiving the blessings of Sri. Sivashankar Baba of Samratchana – Kelambakkam. Jyothsna’s Lec. dem on the theme “moods” based on various ragas was very much appreciated by the Director,Ministry of culture and she was chosen to represent the south zone at Jawahar Bal Bhavan Delhi. While at college Jyothsna was the cultural secretary and has won accolades for her college and presently, Radhika is following suit. The duo have also been actively involved in the activities of YACM and are striving to promote young musicians of their kind. They have given several out station concerts like asthana mandapam tirumala, SICA indore, Yagnavalkya Ashram, Nanjai Pugalur, Rajalakshmi fine arts-Coimbatore which have been very well received.

Their journey continues ....Concert_Pic2
